Coffee freezing & our tubes

Why plastic?
Glass has class and looks the part but it’s not designed for freezing. Our food safe PP tubes are 100% functionality first. They don’t get brittle or break and they are designed to have a tight seal as well as handle up to -40c .  But we still want some style or a little bling factor while being functional. This is why Im offering the option to customize the beancoffers in unique colors.

Can I grind strait out of the freezer?

YES! For espresso and for pourover but some coffee experts recommend waiting around 5 minutes for pourover because it produces slightly less fines.

No valve? WTF

First…… let’s back it’s up a bit. Did you know Co2 is one of the main things keeping your coffee fresh & from going stale? Second, once CO2 is gone oxygen can invade and degrade your coffees unique flavor. At that point it all goes downhill fast. But how long it degases is subject to roast level and bean density.

As someone who has been roasting coffee for around two decades I can assure you that by the time most medium roasts hit your counter top or cafe it’s probably degassed close to the perfect amount of time in order to freeze. But if the roaster is on the lighter it’s possible to wait a couple weeks or  even up to 6 weeks longer. A tip to speed this up is leave the bag cracked open for a day.

When freezing you want to  lock that flavor in and minimize headspace, no oxygen or Co2 in or out Just a very tight seal or vacuum seal.  We can barrow knowledge from cryogenics where they freeze embryos or even viruses. A one way valve is definitely a no go! Along with poptops or glass.

*pro tip* leaving a “little” co2 in the beans not only slows the aging process but can add a nice  sparkle to the acidity.

When do I freeze?

Every purchase from lushwd comes with a small post roast freeze guide but don’t be afraid to trust your tastebuds because only you know what tastes good.

What should I avoid to keep my coffee more fresh?

  • *Oxygen*
  •  Heat
  •  Moisture
  •  Excess headspace
  •  Uv (only a minor impact over time)
  •  Pop-tops
  •  Caps with valves
  •  Anything that does not have a lock tight seal
